Hope Community – Discipline Policy

The need for discipline in the Christian life and in the training of youth is found throughout scriptures and establishes the basis for this written policy with some examples given below:

Discipline is commanded by God. (Proverbs 22:6)

Discipline is associated with love. (Hebrews 12:5-11)

Discipline prevents others from learning ungodly habits. (Galatians 5:9)

Discipline exposes the wickedness of the human heart to draw the unsaved to Jesus. (Proverbs 19:18)

Discipline of children is the primary responsibility of parents, however Hope Community Church also believes in maintaining discipline within our youth ministry at all times for a safe and effective learning environment.

The Hope Community Church policy is to refrain from administering corporal punishment to any child. There should be no spanking, grabbing, hitting or other physical discipline of children. Anyone ministering to youth should consult with the Pastor or CE director if assistance is needed with disciplinary issues. In no case are teachers permitted to physically or verbally abuse a child.

Below are examples of when discipline may be required:

Damage to Hope Community Church property

Disrespectful responses to teachers or unkindness toward peers

Direct disobedience or belligerent defiance to a request from a teacher

Disruption by noise, actions or attitudes that interfere with the learning process

Any actions that are contrary to the standard of conduct presented in the Word of God

In our discipline we will seek to follow the steps outlined below realizing not all children and situations are the same.

Warning –  Child will be warned of the consequence should the misbehavior occur again

Time Out  – Child will be placed in an isolated part of the room for a few minutes. When time outs occur, the parent will be notified by the teacher or the CE Director.

Removal from Class – If a child continues in disobedience, he or she will be removed from class. If the student has no intentions of changing his/her behavior, permanent removal from class or activity will be discussed.
